All My Little Failures
Andrew McPhail
Lives in Hamilton, Ontario

An artist-in-residence program with subsequent exhibition of new work; performance and installation.

Andrew McPhail’s recent work has centered on his HIV status. All My Little Failures is a sculptural installation made of band-aids. This body of work has recently taken the form of a large veil made of 30,000 band-aids that the artist uses in performance pieces or installed in an installation. The work deals with the artist’s own anxieties about his health and physical connection to the world, skin as a barrier and the meaning of touch. A recent addition to this body of work is a piece called Not My Fault made of 200 industrial rubber gloves sewn together and spelling out the word ‘sorry’.

McPhail has a Bachelor and Masters of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. This year he had a solo exhibition in the Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario. He has been the successful recipient of several Ontario Arts Council grants and a Canada Council short-term grant in 1992.

The artist residency program incubates artists and allows them to focus their time for one month on a new body of work. Artists are encouraged to experiment and work with the local community of Fredericton.
