Ardeth Maguire

A painter for 15 years, I work in the impressionist style in both watercolour and acrylic, with a strong focus on colour. Since 1996, I have been a member of the Fredericton Society of Artists.

Over the years I have studied the work of the French Impressionists and though mostly self-taught, have participated in and learned from many workshops. One of my most important learning experiences was studying for a short period with the late Robert Percival, a renowned Saint John artist.

Cats are a favourite subject for my work and are a never-ending source of creativity for me. In art history there are many great cat painters but perhaps none so inspirational as Steinlen (1859-1923) and it is a humbling, yet motivating, experience to view his notable paintings of cats.

What I love about painting is the solitariness of it and the striving to make something beautiful out of a bare surface. And I love the feeling of connection with people who understand and appreciate my work.
