June 2 – June 30, 2010

On June 2nd, Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery reveals two new exhibitions by Meredith Snider and Hector Javier Tovar Gonzalez.

Tell Me Where You’ve Been and What You’ve Done is a series of drawings on paper using mixed media. Meredith begins the drawings by putting India ink on wet paper to create the illusion of place or atmosphere. Watercolor, chalk pastel, conté and charcoal are all tools she uses to draw objects within the inky landscape. The exhibition references travel, shared experiences through images, and the history of objects.

Meredith Snider graduated from Concordia University in 2005 with a Fine Arts Degree and a Specialization in Art Education. After traveling through Mexico and Central America for 6 months, she returned to Fredericton in 2006 and was employed as the Executive Director of Gallery Connexion, where she continues to work.

Vinylika Experimental is a series of large-scale designs made using recycled vinyl records by artist Hector Javier Tovar Gonzalez. Hector immigrated to Canada from Mexico seven years ago and is currently enrolled in the Communication and Design program at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Hector enjoys experimenting with found and salvaged materials. Part of his inspiration for using vinyl records comes from his passion for music and the goal to combine music and visual art. Each piece is titled after the song or artist depicted on the record in the center of the design. Hector is beginning to experiment further with vinyl material by moving into three-dimensional designs on panels. If you have records that you are no longer listening to, bring them to the opening reception on June 2 and Hector will gladly make use of them.

The exhibit will be held at the Annex Gallery located in The Playhouse, 686 Queen St. Fredericton. It runs from June 2nd to June 30th. The Annex Gallery promises to offer its visitors a visually captivating art experience. Admission is free.

Please visit our new main gallery located in the Chestnut Complex, 440 York Street Fredericton. If you are interested in becoming a member and getting involved visit our website at: www.galleryconnexion.ca

15 RESTLESS NIGHTS BY DEREK BESANT

EXHIBITION: APRIL 8 TO MAY 13, 2010
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, APRIL 16 AT 5PM

The Board of Directors and staff of Gallery Connexion invite the members and the general public to an exhibition opening on Friday, April 16 at 5pm in the Chestnut Complex at 440 York Street in Fredericton.

15 Restless Nights is a contemporary art installation by Derek Besant that includes sound and text as well as 15 large-scale printed images of unmade hotel beds. Besant drove across Canada, spending nights in strange motels. Each morning the artist would wait and watch as people vacated their rooms and left their doors open. Before the maids could make their rounds, Besant photographed the unmade beds and disarray like a crime scene. The large-scale images are printed on industrial veil scrim. As a viewer experiences the installation, all the various aspects (sound, text and image) come together to engender an intense emotional impact.

15 Restless Nights was exhibited in Europe as a solo project for the 2008 International Print Biennial in The Municipal Museum of Art in Györ, Hungary, which toured it to the Veszprem Art Museum, Veszprem, Hungary and The Dunaszerdahely Contemporary Art Gallery in Slovakia. In Canada, 15 Restless Nights has shown at the Harbourfront Centre in Ontario, the Raymond-Lasnier centre d’exposition and Engramme Centre art actuel in Québec, and at the Kelowna Art Gallery and The Reach Art Museum in B.C.

Derek Michael Besant was born in 1950 in Alberta where he studied at the University of Calgary, 1969-74. Head of the Drawing Program/ Dept of Fine Arts, Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary, from 1977-1993, he remains on the Fine Arts Faculty. Since 1973, solo exhibitions of his work have been held at museums and galleries in Québec, Bratislava, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Denmark, Macedonia, Canada, Russia, Argentina, Finland, USA, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and England. His work has also featured in innumerable international group exhibitions and publications and is represented in 100 university, museum and other public collections worldwide. He divides his time between home/studios in Alberta and Mexico.

“I suppose, ultimately, I am still searching and mining the context of human trajectories through the spaces no one thinks about much. Motel rooms, construction sites, back alleys, swimming pools. In hunting and gathering my resources from those places, I come up with recurring themes like those out of film scripts: sleeping, wandering, falling, drowning, assembling or migrating. But I’ve always found something lingering in those places between things, some kind of connective tissue to something like a basic truth we collectively understand.” – Derek Michael Besant

We hope to see you there on Friday, April 16 at 5pm at Gallery Connexion to open this exciting new exhibition.

For more information please contact the gallery at 454-1433 or connex@nbnet.nb.ca

PRESS RELEASE (VISUAL ARTS)
February 23, 2010

On March 9, Gallery Connexion’s Annex Gallery reveals two new exhibitions by Multiple Exposures and Marie Fox. The exhibition by 3rd year NBCCD photography student group Multiple Exposures titled “Discovery” displays a series of unique photographs. The exhibition by painter Marie Fox titled ‘Caught in the Peripheral’ and curated by WhiteFeather comprises of a series of model paintings. Both exhibitions open at the Annex Gallery located in the Playhouse at 686 Queen Street on Tuesday, March 9th at 5pm. Please join us for an opening reception. The exhibitions will run from March 3 until the 28th, 2010. Admission is free.

Multiple Exposures, consisting of graduating 3rd year photography students from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, will be showing their work titled ‘Discovery’. The group picked the title because they will soon be finishing school and entering into the ‘real’ world and are now discovering new things about their work and themselves. So come along and see which ‘Discovery’ they have each found!

‘Caught in the Peripheral’ is a curated solo exhibition of paintings by Charlottetown artist Marie Fox. Fox says of her work, “My approach to painting is a thoroughly ritualistic process, an obsessive decoding and reassembling of visionary experience. In this series, I have photographed each model individually, to use as a physical embodiment of an archetype. Her face is wiped clean of make-up or personal identity, and she is given organic props such as antlers, branches, or feathers. In an instinctive moment of powerful vulnerability, the model transcends herself and becomes the link between memory and image. Artist Marie Fox is a mainly self-taught painter living and practicing her art in Charlottetown, PEI. Curator WhiteFeather is an award winning artist, educator, arts administrator, advocate and writer based in Fredericton. This is Marie’s second solo exhibition curated by WhiteFeather, and this is WhiteFeather’s fourth curatorial project.
The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include programmed exhibitions in its galleries.

The Annex Gallery is organized by a Gallery Connexion committee and facilitated by the Fredericton Playhouse. For more information, contact Rita Sassani at nnxgallery@gmail.com

PRESS RELEASE – January 26, 2010

GALLERY CONNEXION ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST OPENING RECEPTION AT 440 YORK STREET ON FEBRUARY 11, 2010 WITH ARTIST JOSÉ LUIS TORRES.
The Board of Directors of Gallery Connexion are excited to invite the public to the first opening reception in the Chestnut Complex at 440 York Street! Please join us to celebrate the opening of a new community space in Fredericton and to unveil our inaugural exhibition by Argentinean/Quebec artist José Luis Torres on Thursday, February 11 at 5pm. Absolutely everyone is welcome. Torres returns to complete a gallery component of a residency he began in July of 2009 where he built an on-site installation behind the Charlotte Street Art Centre. Torres will see the gallery through the transition from ‘ homeless’ to ‘having a home’. Gallery Connexion has produced a catalogue for his residency titled Nomadic Landscape: The Sculpture of José Luis Torres with essays by Carol Collicutt and the artist.

In her essay Collicutt writes, “His constructions offer an interaction with place, and a reference to our relationship with landscape. They are architecture on a human scale, charged with our desire to belong and settle. They also address the nomadic condition and the varying environments experienced by a moving society. At once familiar and aloof, his sculptures contain ideas of movement, adaptability and identity. In a formal sense, they speak to the viewer about the present, the past, and the concept of emotional shift. They silently draw the visitor into a world that is dynamic and fraught with change, while at the same time providing a space for connection and reflection”.

Since 2004 Torres has worked as the coordinating artist for the Ice Hotel in Quebec City. His studies in architecture and the visual arts allow him to design and realize the majority of the public spaces within the hotel and coordinate groups of sculptors. Each year Torres receives the plans for the hotel and along with the Artistic Director create a new and exciting structure to stretch the imaginations of the public and make for a memorable experience for those who visit. Torres has exhibited his work extensively across Canada and in Argentina and has created permanent sculptures in public spaces across the world. He has participated in international symposiums and has received a long list of awards and distinctions for his work.

Everyone is welcome to share in the excitement of opening the first exhibition in a newly renovated artist-run center, one year and a half in the making and a continuing work in progress. The artist will be in attendance. A grand opening is being planned for a later date at which time the main gallery will be dedicated as the Rick Burns Gallery.
